A Natural Solution for the Control of Invasive Mussels
SePRO Corporation, in partnership with Marrone™ Bio Innovations, is in the final stages of development of a natural solution for invasive mussel control in surface water (Zequanox).
- Zequanox is a natural solution for invasive mussel control
- A microbial-based product documented to target only the invasive zebra and quagga mussels (Dreissena species)
- Has been demonstrated to be effective against all zebra and quagga mussel life stages, including the planktonic larval stage
- First and only invasive mussel control solution that is naturally sourced and environmentally compatible
- To be classified by United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) as a non-oxidizing biopesticide
Zequanox is being developed as a highly effective, microbial-based product that will selectively control both of the major exotic mussel species that continue to invade freshwater ecosystems throughout North America. SePRO is currently working (prior to its EPA registration) to optimize the product’s efficacy, under a variety of field conditions, enhance product formulation, and perfect treatment programs in open water environments. SePRO is also seeking input from aquatic resource managers about how this new solution will eventually be incorporated into the protection and restoration of these open water environments. Zequanox will be the first and only naturally-sourced and environmentally compatible method for invasive mussel control in open water. U.S. EPA registration of a Zequanox product is expected in time for the 2011 application season.
