Carlsbad Desalination Plant to Enter Trials

     Capable of producing 54-million gallons of potable water daily, the Carlsbad Desalination Plant began operating this week in preparation for its November 26 deadline. Currently putting out 50-million gallons of drinking water per day, the water is being dumped back into the ocean until inspectors can make sure everything is working properly.

     The daily output will be pushed 10 miles uphill in order to be delivered to the San Diego County Water Authority aqueduct. More expensive per acre-foot than reservoir or recycled water, the water will be less expensive than imported water (which accounts for 90% of the water in San Diego County).
