Campers Help Map Treatment Areas

Michigan – Heather Rawlings, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist, lead campers from Camp Chickagami in an effort to identify phragmites and other invasive species in the Presque Isle Quarry. While using GPS  and tape measures to plot out areas that will receive herbicide treatments in the months to come, the young campers learned about invasives. "Invasive species are aggressive and have some biological advances that allow them to take over an area and colonize rapidly," Rawlings said. Those involved hope the program turns into a success, "It is an ongoing thing so you have to continually update it with photographs and monitoring along with partners," said Ivan Wirgau, quarry chemical quality analyst.
