Invasive Elodea Found in Another Alaska Lake

Alexander Lake in south-central Alaska has a confirmed infestation of a variety of Elodea invasive to the region. The State Department of Natural Resources began herbicide treatments along the Kenai Peninsula, and now multiple agencies are exploring mechanical control as part of a comprehensive management plan. According to local officials Elodea's introduction only highlights the need for increased education and vigilance among boaters, “This recent discovery of Elodea in the lake illustrates how recreational equipment can introduce this invasive plant to remote freshwater and fish habitat,” said Department of Natural Resources Invasive Weeds Coordinator Brianne Blackburn.
