Spiny Waterflea Found in New Minnesota Water Bodies

Basswood Lake and the downstream waters of Crooked, Iron and Bottle lakes have been added to the state’s list of infested waters after zooplankton samples revealed the presence of spiny water flea. The small planktonic crustacean, an invasive species, “disrupts the food web and competes with small fish as it forages microscopic animal plankton.” The flea itself, however, is not eaten by small fish due to its tail, which resembles a long spike. The infestation, if uncontrolled, can pose particular problems for fishing and boating equipment.
